We use soft maple hardwood with a pigmented lacquer finish.  In most respects the wood of soft maple is very similar to that of hard maple. Soft maple is about 25% less hard than Hard Maple. This still makes this hardwood very hard and dent resistant.  Soft maple machines well and can be stained and polished to an excellent finish.

Pigmented lacquer is superior to latex or acrylic based paints because it produces a finish that dries harder and is easier to keep clean.  The deep sheen of pigmented lacquer mixed with the superior polish quality of soft maple makes an extra ordinary finish.
